CEEC International Partners with Whittle Consulting to Drive Innovation in Water Management in Mining

CEEC International (Coalition for Minerals Efficiency), a leading not-for-profit organisation focused on promoting eco-efficient mining practices, is proud to announce a new collaboration with Whittle Consulting. This partnership will advance research and industry understanding within CEEC’s Global Water Initiative (GWI), which is aiming to address critical water-related challenges in the resources sector.

Under this collaboration, Whittle Consulting will apply its cutting-edge Enterprise Optimisation (EO) methodologies to model and assess water consumption, treatment, and management within mining operations. The study will utilise the recently updated Neo-Marvin orebody model, a sophisticated and realistic proxy block model designed to optimise complex mining projects. Through this model, the collaboration will explore the economic and environmental impact of various water management strategies, integrating them directly into the life-of-mine (LOM) planning and production processes.

Janine Herzig, Executive President of CEEC International, stated, "This new collaboration with Whittle Consulting marks a significant and exciting step forward in our efforts to promote sustainable water practices in mining. By leveraging Whittle’s advanced modelling techniques and expertise, CEEC aims to generate realistic operational scenarios that will drive more informed decision-making in water use and management, leading to more sustainable and efficient mining operations. Ultimately with the GWI, CEEC is confident the sector as a whole will have improved knowledge of water-related matters that will ultimately assist investors and other stakeholders in making informed decisions."

The study will explore various scenarios, including the impact of different water supply sources, tailings management strategies, and climatic and geological contexts. The results are expected to provide valuable data and insights that will be used to refine and enhance public-domain tools for researchers focused on water in mining. Gerald Whittle, CEO of Whittle Consulting, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, saying, "We are excited to contribute our expertise to this important initiative. Water is a critical resource in mining, and our work with CEEC will help to bridge the gap between strategic mine planning and the effective management of water resources."

This partnership underscores CEEC International’s commitment to fostering collaboration, communication and innovation in the resources sector. The Global Water Initiative is part of CEEC’s broader mission to promote the adoption of eco-efficient practices that reduce environmental impact while improving operational efficiency.
