The Coalition for Energy Efficient Comminution (CEEC) welcomes Ausenco’s Chief Technical Officer Greg Lane to its Board of Directors.

In announcing the appointment, CEEC CEO Alison Keogh said Mr Lane brought to the board more than 30 years’ experience in the field of engineering, design and operation of minerals processing plants.

“Greg is an internationally recognised expert in concentrator design with additional expertise in comminution circuit design. He has written and presented numerous papers on these topics, many of which relate to the selection of efficient processes, capital cost effectiveness in design, and roles and relationships in project development,” she said.

“Greg understands the value miners derive from comminution and processing design and application, and he is passionate about driving transformative change. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the CEEC leadership team, and we’re proud to have him on board.”

Mr Lane said CEEC played an important role in the sharing of comminution strategies, successes, innovation and research across the global mining industry, and he was pleased to join the board as a director.

“This appointment brings together my interest in comminution circuit design and engineering, innovation and energy efficiency at a strategic level,” he said.

“I’m particularly interested in understanding how the industry can achieve a balance between energy efficient comminution and project simplicity. Some practitioners propose complex solutions that may be efficient at a fundamental level, but are compromised by complexity and cost in application.

“Let’s take as examples, a comminution circuit that has been converted from a SABC circuit into a secondary crusher/HPGR/SAG mill/ball mill circuit, achieving a 30% boost in efficiency. Why is the new circuit more efficient? How can we make it less complex in terms of materials handling? Does dry compression crushing with air classification offer significant cost savings?

“CEEC is uniquely positioned to share these types of challenging questions across the industry, to promote discussion and disseminate solutions. I believe we need to be a compass for future development in comminution.”

Mr Lane brings governance experience to the CEEC Board; he is a non-executive director of NQMinerals PLC, a London-listed resources company. Mr Lane has worked in minerals processing for more than three decades, joining Ausenco, a Brisbane-based engineering and project management business, as Manager Technology and Innovation in 2004. He has worked on the company’s major studies and projects, specialising in cost-effective design and innovative solutions for minerals processing. Prior to joining Ausenco, he was a Principal Process Engineer and Study Manager at Minproc, a position he held for 10 years. He has also worked for Western Mining at Kambalda, WA; for Aberfoyle at Hellyer, Tasmania; taught at the WA School of Mines in Kalgoorlie (after completing a Master of Science from the University of Tasmania).

Mr Lane joins an accomplished and global CEEC Board, comprising: Chair Joe Pease (specialist consultant to the minerals industry), Michael Battersby (Managing Director Maelgwyn Minerals Services Ltd), Simon Hille (Vice President Metallurgy and Process Goldcorp Incorporated), Dr Mary Stewart (Chief Operating Officer, Energetics), Dr Zeljka Pokrajcic (Principal PETRA Data Science) and Alison Keogh (Chief Executive and Company Secretary).

Emeritus Professor Tim Napier-Munn (SMI-JKMRC) and Ivan Mullany (Senior Vice President Metallurgy and Process Goldcorp Incorporated), have recently retired from the CEEC Board. Ms Keogh expressed her gratitude for Tim’s long-standing involvement as one of the founding directors of CEEC, and for Ivan’s invaluable knowledge about the North American and global mining industry.

“We are thankful for the expertise and the efforts our past and present directors have made – all on a pro bono basis. Their strategic direction enables us to keep mining and METS companies at the cutting edge of minerals processing and comminution advances,” she said.

“As CEEC enters its next chapter, I am excited about where we are headed under the leadership of our dedicated Board of Directors. Greg Lane’s skills and experience are an asset to CEEC, and we welcome him to the team.”
