CitiC HiC has recently expanded its manufacturing capabilities for large grinding mills. This expansion includes larger casting and gear- cutting facilities enabling it to pour up to 600 t single piece castings. Coupled with the world’s largest gear-cutting and finishing facilities CitiC HiC can manufacture gears up to 16 m in diameter with modules up to 42 (module= reference diameter / number of teeth). This means CitiC HiC has the ca- pability to design and manufacture Grinding mills up to 13.7 m (45 ft) diameter with 35 MW gearless drives and 12.8 m (42 ft) diameter with dual 12 MW drive geared mills.
This paper will detail the manufacture of the world’s largest mills manu- factured to date, the world’s largest shop trial run and delivery of these mills completely assembled to the port of export and delivered to Sino Iron Project in Australia fully assembled. Sino Iron (magnetite) Project is a 140 million metric tons per annum processing plant producing 80 million tons of concentrate per annum. All this iron ore is processed through six of the world’s largest AG mills (12.2 m diameter × 11 m long with 28 MW drives) and six 7.9 m diameter × 13.6 m long ball mills with dual 7.8 MW drives.
The full design and manufacture of these mills by CitiC HiC resulted in a rotating element weighing 1400 t which was fully assembled at the port of export resting on specially finite-element analysis designed transport and erection cradles. Hydraulically driven Self Propelled Modular Transporters (sPMt) then drove the mills onto a barge and off again at site where a custom design lifting structure together with synchronized Enerpac Strain Jacks where used to lift and place the completely assembled rotating elements into position to rest on their multi-pad trunnion bearings.
