JON ALLEN (METSO MINING AND CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY) gave the Quebec Mines 2013 delegates Metso's view on mill design and applications, as well as an update on work with JKMRC.

"Rising energy costs, requirements to minimize energy consumption, and a commitment to sustainable solutions in the mineral process industry is demanding technology breakthrough. To confront these challenges Metso has invested heavily in the application and machine development of our stirred milling technologies for both coarse and fine grinding. Stirred milling has a long and successful history of grinding application in metallic mineral industry, most often in regrinding roles, and has yielded significant energy consumption reductions. Recent advances in machine design and a better understanding of the benefits of stirred milling in coarser applications is yielding even greater benefits.

This presentation will discuss Metso’s envelope pushing applications including an update on the 3000 HP VERTIMILL® Grinding mills and the planned first 4500 HP Vertimill at Northland Resources’ Kaunisvaara project, the first SMD-1100 Stirred Media Detritor, and the application of Vertimills following high pressure grinding rolls.  It will also discuss the larger machine design philosophy to cope with the challenges of larger machines and features to improve the maintainability while maintaining safe and reliable equipment operation. Additionally, this presentation will provide an update on collaborative research initiatives between Metso and our partners such as the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC)."
