CEO Gold Fields, Nick Holland, becomes CEEC Patron

The Board of CEEC International Ltd (Coalition for Energy Efficient Comminution) is delighted to announce that Mr Nick Holland, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of Gold Fields Ltd, has accepted their invitation to become a Patron of CEEC.

Mr Holland joins CEEC’s founding Patron, Owen Hegarty, in the challenge of raising awareness of the high energy intensity of comminution (crushing and grinding) and the opportunities for mining companies to become more cost efficient in this key step. It is estimated that crushing and grinding represents around 40-50% of electrical energy consumption in mining and around 4% of total global electrical consumption.

CEEC Chairman, Elizabeth Lewis-Gray, said “CEEC International has been established by the mining industry for the mining industry. Energy efficiency in mining is a global issue, and the energy impact of comminution will rise exponentially over the short term as grades decline. This is a topic that requires attention at board level, not just by the technical team, and we are delighted that Mr Holland has agreed to support our cause to raise awareness with a particular focus both through his global connections and on the African continent.”

Mr Holland said “Gold Fields has a strong strategic level focus on sustainability and improving energy efficiency is a core element of Gold Fields’ strategy. In addition, energy delivery in Africa has immediate challenges and I am pleased to be able to support awareness of one of the most significant areas of energy consumption in mining through my appointment as Patron of CEEC.

Gold Fields was an early sponsor of CEEC and has an enviable sustainability record so far.  In December 2011 Gold Fields was ranked first in the JSE Top 100 Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) by the global Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). At the same time the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) rated the Company as one of its most consistent performers in its Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Index for five years running. Nick Holland commented on the awards:

In March 2012 Mr Holland noted. "We have already managed to reduce our electricity consumption by around 17% against the 2007 baseline despite the fact that we ramped-up production at our South Deep project during the period". He added that Gold Fields would be seeking further electricity savings. In 2011, Gold Fields achieved the 4th highest position out of a ‘universe’ of 108 global mining companies on the 2011 Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) – the most widely recognized measure of the sustainability performance of listed companies worldwide.

Mr Holland holds BCom, BAcc, University of the Witwatersrand; CA (SA). Mr Holland was appointed an executive director of Gold Fields in 1997 and became CEO on 1 May 2008. Prior to that he was the company’s CFO. Mr Holland has more than 30 years’ experience in financial management, of which 22 years were in the mining industry. Prior to joining Gold Fields, he was Financial Director and Senior Manager of Corporate Finance at Gencor. He is also an alternate director of the Rand Refinery.

CEEC (Coalition for Energy Efficient Comminution) was established in 2011 to support knowledge sharing and change in an area of high energy consumption for the mineral industry.  CEEC is a not-for-profit company funded by grants from the mineral industry, whose mission is to accelerate knowledge and technology transfer in the field of energy-efficient comminution.  www.ceecthefuture.org.

CEEC aims to raise awareness of beneficial comminution strategies with the objective of improving earnings, achieving lower process costs and gaining energy efficiencies in the mining sector. The CEEC Roadmap is intended to provide guidance to mining operators on pathways to energy efficiency with specific focus on comminution. The CEEC Roadmap summarizes opportunities for immediate and longer term improvements in energy efficient mineral processing, and is applicable in every site. CEEC awards a Medal annually for the most outstanding paper on eco-efficient comminution, details may be found on the CEEC web site. Nominations for the 2013 Medal close on March 15 2013.
