Public demand for the “Sustainable Development” and CO2 reduction will increase the pressure for more energy efficient comminution. To assess the avenues for reduction of energy required for comminution with already available technologies, modeling and simulations were undertaken using data from a nominated mining site. They were directed to calculate comminution energy consumption for a conventional blasting/SAG/ballmill circuit and an alternative high intensity blasting/High Pressure Grinding Rolls/Verti mill circuit. The simulation work has indicated that energy savings in excess of 45 % are with application of high intensity blasting, High Pressure Grinding Rolls and the stirred milling technology. Obtained results illustrate that more efficient comminution of ores is “just around the corner”.
